Information ASTAG: Working safely possible even in Corona times!

02.04.2020

Last but not least, guaranteeing the hygiene situation in Switzerland depends on a functioning sewage disposal system. Drain maintenance must therefore not be neglected. Especially in the current crisis situation, municipalities and cities are required to continue maintenence. In the interests of the population and the environment, work should not be unnecessarily delayed.

The reliable and safe maintenance of the waste disposal supply is a crucial challenge in the current crisis situation. Among other things, the full functionality of the sewage system throughout Switzerland must be guaranteed. Otherwise, the hygiene measures of the federal government cannot be met.

The Swiss commercial vehicle association ASTAG, which also represents the sewer maintenance industry with its own specialist group for drainage technology, is therefore making an urgent appeal to the cities and municipalities. Maintenance and renewal work should and can be pushed forward - without increased risk! The companies and specialists in drainage technology have the necessary special knowledge and skills to be able to carry out sewer maintenance without further endangering the employees. The basis is the mandatory personal protective equipment (PPE) and the proper protective measures. "The members of the industry take the situation very seriously," assures Daniel Nater, President of the ASTAG specialist group Drainage Technology: "The health of people has top priority - more than ever".

Prevention to protect the environment and the population

Of course, the companies in the sewer maintenance industry strictly adhere to the recommendations of the Federal Office of Public Health BAG. The information of the operating and administrative staff is guaranteed, as is the implementation of the ordered measures. Conversely, the industry also expects goal-oriented, factual and open communication from the federal government.

It must be made clear to Authorities, offices, administrations and private individuals that sewer maintenance work is of central importance right now. Otherwise, there may be blockages, backwater of waste water in buildings, water pollution and consequential damage, which can have catastrophic effects, especially at this time. All hospitals, without exception all companies and households in Switzerland as well as nature are absolutely dependent on functioning sewage pipes. Subsequent repairs due to neglect would also be time-consuming and unnecessarily expensive.

In the interest of the population, the ASTAG drainage technology specialist group is therefore calling for necessary work to be tackled immediately. In addition to the indispensable health and environmental protection, the public sector can also make a further contribution to preserving jobs in the current crisis - especially since the budget amounts have already been agreed upon in many municipalities and cities. "The sewer maintenance is unavoidable, it would be wrong to wait now because of unfounded fears," says Daniel Nater.
